Every minister's call story is unique. Just as God reveals God's self in many ways, God also speaks and invites men and women to pastoral ministry in a variety of voices. This volume is a collection of call stories from pastors representing a cross-section of Baptist life. Some, like me, were called at a very young age. Others were called to transition from successful careers in the marketplace. Some answered the call immediately, and others wrestled with the call before reaching a sense of clarity. These stories come from a menagerie of ministers representing diverse theological perspectives. The common denominators of this group are their Christian commitment, their Baptist heritage, and their unique call experience.Behind almost every call story is a faithful yet imperfect congregation, supporting, affirming, and encouraging the future minister in his or her calling. I am grateful for these pastors who were willing to share their story, and for the congregations that helped them to flesh out their calling.
Someone has said that a friendship begins when one person says to another, "Hey, me too!" That was my reaction to reading the essays found within "Call Stories." Barry Howard has compiled a significant group of personal reflections about God's sacred call to ministry, and from a diverse group of ministers. Women, men, young and more seasoned clergy have written in Call Stories about how they were prompted to serve. There are at least three distinct types of readers who will benefit from these. First and most obviously, vocational ministers will no doubt hear bits and pieces of their own stories within many of the essays. That's why the "Hey, me too!" voice went off so strongly as I read. No one writer told all of my own call experience, but several touched on elements of how God spoke to me. Church members and leaders should also come away with a clearer understanding of how their ministers came their way. That is invaluable. Best of all, Christians who may have no inkling of a call to vocational ministry will still hear voices of faithfulness in the book. God's call to a lifestyle of servanthood takes many shapes, and is extended to all. I wholeheartedly recommend buying a copy of Call Stories. In fact, buy two. One for you to read and one to give to a minister at your church!
