Product Description

With over 150,000 copies sold worldwide, This Is a Call, is the definitive biography of Dave Grohl, the story of a singular career that includes Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age, and Them Crooked Vultures. Based on ten years of original, exclusive interviews with the man himself and conversations with a legion of musical associates such as Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme, Washington DC punk legend Ian MacKaye, Nevermind producer Butch Vig and former bandmates from Mission Impossible, Dain Bramage and Scream, this is Grohl's epic story. He speaks candidly and honestly about Kurt Cobain, the arguments that almost tore Nirvana apart, the feuds that threatened to derail the Foo Fighters's global success, and the dark days that almost caused him to quit music for good.Dave Grohl has emerged as one of the most recognizable and respected musicians in the world. He is the last true hero to emerge from the American underground. This Is a Call vividly recounts this incredible rock 'n' roll journey.

This book is a good read. I was interested in finding a biography on him just to get his side of the story about him rerecording nearly all of the drum tracks on Color and the Shape (which I did) but was glad that the book ended up being a good read. I had no idea how much he was a part of the 80s DC punk scene and there was a lot of good info about that, his upbringing and introduction into music, even what songs were the first ones he did all of the parts for fully on his own (including a Scream song and a tape he put out quietly and without specific reference so that people wouldn't know it was him). I also appreciated how the author gives a lot of backstory or goes into detail that's not necessarily about Dave but still pertinent to the story or at least interesting. What I like about rock biographies, specifically those of people/bands who I was into in the 90s, is the backstory on other bands they they were in, references to other bands that were popular at the time that relate to the time period (that I can relate to), and to other bands that they toured with and this book does all of that. I actually read a library copy first but decided to buy it here on Amazon so I can share it and read it again sometime.
